Garmin first released the Garmin zumo 550. They have many features which greatly enhance both the long trip and the local runabout.
Garmin seems to have the widest selection of GPS units designed for motorcycles. Since the release of the Zumo 550 several other models have been released including the zumo 660,the zumo 450, and the zumo 655. It has been said that if it moves Garmin makes a GPS unit for it. They are not the only company however that makes a GPS for motorcycles. They do however seem to be the most popular.
We will be reviewing a variety of GPS units that have been either designed for motorcycles,
or that can be modified for motorcycle use. Let’s first look at some of the features that come with the GPS designed for motorcycles.
First of all most of the Garmin units come with a motorcycle mount and the zumo 660 comes with both a motorcycle and an automotive mount, which allows you to use the unit both in your car and on your motorcycle. Most of the more units also feature a 10,000 point track log which allows you to record your trip for posterity.

They also feature Bluetooth connectivity which allows you to be in constant communication with the unit and gives you the ability to make any answer telephone calls, without taking your hands off the handlebars. If you have XM service then
you can also use this feature to access some of the unique programming that they offer, such as traffic and weather. The unit also keeps track of details such as speed, heading, altitude, and some units will also keep track of your fuel.
What Is So Special
The main point is that each units are both waterproof and vibration proof, as they would need to be for motorcycle use. There are waterproof casings which allow you to use a regular automobile unit, making it possible to use your car GPS with your motorcycle.
If you do much off-road biking, there are various handheld GPS units, for which you can get a mount to put on either a bike or a motorcycle, so that you’ll never get lost no matter how far out of the way you go.
We will attempt to review all of the various models of GPS for Motorcycles eventually, but to begin with will start with one of the first models, the zumo 550,, which is still a very popular model even today. We will also look at the unit which is touted as being designed by bikers for bikers, the zumo 660 and one of the latest versions the Zum0 665.
